over the River Tyne at or near a place called the East boat near that
Town for or on behalf of the Complainant He Errington in case the
Complainant should enter into an Agreement with the Magistrates of
the County for that purpose And in case the said Deponent should upon
Survey and Examination of the Ground, or Bottom of the River, at or
near the said place find it such as in the Estimation of this Deponent
should be sufficient for the foundation of a Bridge at that place: Mr
Donkin then alledging (on this Deponent’s Enquiry) why Mr Errington
confined his Enquiry and Proposition to or near that place, which was
on Account of his Master’s Estate lying on the opposite Side of the
River there, to which an immediate Communication by means of a
Bridge would be so great an advantage as to induce him the said
Complainant to take upon himself the Risque and Trouble of the
Erection provided there was a prospect of doing it without being
considerably out of pocket: but that if he the said Complainant
should be out of pocket Two or £300 he should not be dissatisfied
in case a Bridge could be erected there. But that if a sufficient
Foundation could not be found, in contiguity with the Complainant’s
Estate then he should leave the Undertaking to such as should be
more immediately interested therein.
To this Requisition this Deponent craved Time to give a
definite Answer; not only on Account of his then Engagement as
receiver for Greenwich Hospital but also upon two Considerations
of the nature of the Proposition. The first was the unusual Mode
