Answers of John Smeaton to
Interrogatories for the Examination of Witnesses
to be produced sworn and examined in a certain Cause
now depending and at Issue in the High Court of Chancery
wherein Henry Errington Esqr is Complainant; and
Gawen Ainsley, John Tweddell and Bacon William
Wastell Esqr. are Defendants on the part of the said
Complainant
1st Interrogatory. To this Interrogatory this Witness answers
that he knows all the Parties, Complainant and Defendants, Gawen Ainsley
Esqr excepted. That he has known the Defendants Bacon Wastell and John
Tweddell Esqrs above the Space of 20 Years and the Complainant Henry
Errington Esqr not so long; but yet above 10 Years according to this
Deponent’s best Remembrance and Belief.
2nd Interrogatory. To this Interrogatory this Deponent answering
says that some time in or about the latter part of the year 1776: This
Deponent being then at Hexham upon the Receipt of the Derwentwater
Rents for Greenwich Hospital (for which he was at that time one
of the Agents or Receivers) he was applied to by Mr John Donkin then
Steward or Agent to the said Complainant to know if he the said
Deponent would undertake the direction of the building of a Bridge
