| Dr Sir | ||||
| I have received the favour of | ||||
| yours of the 27th ulto & answer it by this | ||||
| day's post, which is the first that the post | ||||
| arrangement of this place admits of, I wish | ||||
| it may come in time for the 9th tho I | ||||
| hope it is not very material as Donkin will | ||||
| attend at Alnwick & can give you any infor- | ||||
| -mation you might wish for. You know the | ||||
| Sum meant to be propos'd as a compromise | ||||
| is 2,500£ that sum being Judg'd by the person | ||||
| employ'd to make the estimate sufficient to | ||||
| make good all damage & reinstate the bridge | ||||
| as it was before the Catastrophe took place. | ||||
| Now if I pay the whole damage I think that | ||||
| in reason & Justice I ought not to be liable | ||||
| to any further Charge, especially as it strikes | ||||
| me that an act of Parl is necessary only | ||||
| for the Magistrates. I am Competent to tr[eat?] | ||||
| for myself, & I shld think an agreement [made?]* | ||||
| with me by the obligees in the bond wo[uld? be?] | ||||
