Page 18, Will, John Taite, 23 February 1697, p 1

In the Name of God Amen the Twenty third Day of February in the
Year of our Lord one thousand six Hundred Ninety & seaven I John Taite of
Hexham in ye County of Northumbeland Gent being aged & infirme in body but
of sound & perfect memory Praise be to God for it Doe make this my Last Will &
Testament in manner & forme following First I give & bequeath my soule to
Almighty God who Created me, & to my bllessed saviour Jesus Christ who
redeemed me & by whose meritts Death & passion I trust to be saved & received
into eternall rest My Wretched body in hope of A joyfull resurreccon I
committ to ye Earth to be buried in such Decent manner & forme as by my
Executors hereafter named shall be thought fitt & covenient And I Doe
Dispose of my Worldly Estate as followeth First I give & bequeath unto my
Dear & loving wife Ellenor Taite Two Chaires one Green Chaire and Three
stooles one bedstead Feather bedd & furniture standing in the Hall or
forehouse of my now Dwelling house one small Cupboard & A pannell
Chest standing in the Chamber above ye shop All ye brasse scailes and
brasse weights in ye shopp belonging to my sd house one paire of Iron
Barrs standing in Wm Johnsons High roome Item I give & Divise the
Hall or forehouse ye shop & ye Chamber above ye shop in ye house wherein
I now live one Acre of Arrable Land or meadow ground with ye Apps
lyeing & being in Hencoats Feilds called or know by ye names of the
Greens ye Use & benefitt of one Cupboard A Table & A paire of Barrs
standing & being in ye Hall or forehouse of ye Messuage* wherein I now
live And also All ye scailes Weights & Balkes* in the shop Except what is
before menconed unto my Dear & loving wife & her Ass for & during ye
Terme of her nrall life in full recompence & satisfaccon of her Dower
&
and widdow right of & in all my Messuages* Lands Tenemts whereof I now
is or have been seized of since my intermarriage with my sd wife And
from & after her decease then I leave ye sd Goods to my sonn Joseph Provided
always & upon this Condicon neverthelesse that if my sd wife shall refuse
to accept ye severall rooms in my sd house aforesd & other ye Lands & goods
abovemenconed in full recompence & satisfaccon of her Dower & thirds*
and shall refuse to give & Execute such releases of her Dower to my
sonnes Joseph & Edward as Benoni Carr of Hexham Gent shall thinke fitt
in yt behalfe Then my Will further is & I Doe hereby give Devise & bequeath

the sd Roomes in my Dwelling house & other ye Lands & goods abovemenconed
to be given to my sd wife in recompence of her sd Dower unto my
Eldest sonn Joseph Taite & his heires Item I give & bequeath unto my
sonn Joseph Taite the Iron Barrs in the Kitching in ye Chamber above
the Kitchin and in ye Chamber above ye shopp in my sd house to be as
heire-loomes Item I give & bequeath unto my sd sonne Joseph Taite my
Wheele-Carr my Axes spades & other implements of Husbandry Item I
give & bequeath unto my said sonne Joseph one Bedstead standing in ye
Kitchin with a Feather Bedd & other furniture thereunto belonging
& three bedsteads in ye high roome of my sd house Item I give & Devise
unto my sd sonn Joseph All that my mortgage of Eighteen pounds wch
I have on John Prounds House of Wall And my Will is that if ye sd John
Proud shall pay unto my sd sonn Joseph ye sd Mortgage money at ye time
limitted for paymt thereof by ye sd Mortgage then my Desire is that my
sd sonn Joseph shall abate him Foure pounds of ye principall money due
upon ye sd Mortgage Item I give & bequeath unto my sd sonn Joseph
the Long table & all ye Green Chaires Except one standing in ye for room
of my sd house Item I give & Devise unto my said sonn Joseph Taite
and his heires my house wth A stable & a garth thereunto adjoyning standing
& lyeing in Dumfrys in ye Kingdome of Scotland in a place call’d Catestrand
my sd sonn Joseph paying out of the sd house & pmisses unto my Neece
Jennett Ewart the sume of Five pounds at such convenient time as he
shall Dispose of ye same Item I give unto my sonn Edward Taite the
square Table & six redd Chaires standing in ye foreroom one Feather bedd
A Bedstead & furniture thereunto belonging standing in ye Chamb
above ye shopp one Cupboard standing in ye Kitchin of my sd Dwelling
Iron
house & one pair of Barrs standing in ye Dwelling house wherein Tho
Errington now lives And also the sume of Thirty pounds As A legacy
to be payd by my Executs within six months after my Death Item I
give & bequeath unto my Neece Ellenor Ewert the sume of Five pounds
Due to me from Edward Robson of Hexham by bond Item I give and
bequeath unto my sonn Joseph Taite ye sume of Tenn pounds left to me by
Margt Braidley upon speciall trust & confidence that my sd sonn Joseph
shall pay Yearly upon ye Eleaventh Day of November to ye poor of
Hexham ye sume of Twelve shillings being the Interest thereof
